Day 20 – Saturday, January 31, 2026

Read 2 Corinthians 5:14-15

¹⁴ For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; ¹⁵ and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. (2 Cor. 5:14-15).

This week, we have been seeing that a crucified Savior can only be proclaimed with divine power by a crucified people. As followers of Christ must be people of the cross. The apostle Paul serves as a great example for us of such a person.

Day 19 – Friday, January 30, 2026

Read Mark 8:34-38

³⁴ When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.  ³⁵ For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.  ³⁶ For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?  ³⁷ Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?  ³⁸ For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

We want to be disciples of Jesus who make disciples of Jesus (Matt. 28:19-20). This week, we have been seeing that a crucified Savior can only be proclaimed with divine power by a crucified people. As followers of Christ must be people of the cross. We saw yesterday from Mark 8:34 that disciples of Jesus are those who deny themselves, take up their cross, and keep following Him.

You might say, “Wow! Those are some pretty strong demands of discipleship.” And you’re right, they are. Jesus knew that this was a hard saying, so he followed up the demands of discipleship with some reasons for discipleship.

Day 18 – Thursday, January 29, 2026

Read Mark 8:34-38

Read 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

¹ And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. ² For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. ³ I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. ⁴ And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, ⁵ that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (1 Cor. 2:1-5).

This week, we have been considering the message of the cross as the content and motivation for our gospel proclamation (1 Cor. 1:17-25).

Day 16 – Tuesday, January 27, 2026

Read 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

²⁶ For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. ²⁷ But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; (1 Cor. 1:26-27)

Yesterday, we looked at the message of the cross as the heart of the gospel. We saw that it is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power and wisdom of God. The divine wisdom of the cross seems foolish and weak to those who value human knowledge, but Paul asserts, “the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” (1 Cor. 1:25). Worldly wisdom does not have the power to save anyone. Instead, it only destroys the work of the gospel.

The Corinthians themselves were evidence of this truth.

Read Matthew 5:13-16.

Jesus taught His disciples,

¹⁴ “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵ Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. ¹⁶ Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16).

God has called us to be “the light of the world“, pointing people to the way to salvation through Jesus and exposing the depths of the evil of sin that He died to save them from.

Day 11 – Thursday, January 22, 2026

Read Matthew 5:13-16.

The last two days we have considered Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

Salt is a picture of the seasoning, preserving, and purifying influence we are to have in this world as believers. Jesus then continued with another metaphor, saying,
