30 Days of Prayer for the Harvest
Day 6 – Saturday, January 17, 2026
Welcome to day 6 of our 30 days of concentrated prayer for a harvest of souls for Christ. Have you memorized our theme verse? “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Luke 10:2).
Over the last couple of days, we have been looking at the parable of the growing seed, from Mark 4:26-29:
26 And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, 27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. 28 For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
We saw the necessity of sowing the seed of the word of God and the unique power of the message of the gospel to give life. (See Days 4 & 5).
Today’s Devotional: The Ultimate Purpose of God’s Word
After the man scatters the seed (26), the seed sprouts and grows (27), it ripens (28), and finally it brings forth a harvest (29). The ultimate purpose for sowing the seed is the harvest.
Since the seed represents the word of God (Mark 4:14), it pictures the sowing of the gospel message. The seed of God’s word is hidden in human hearts where God is able to cause it to spring to life. We wait patiently (and prayerfully) in this age of grace.
As the plant in the parable grows, it goes through observable stages that the farmer can see: the blade (or stalk); the head (or ear); and the full grain (or kernel). Likewise, often a person who comes to Christ will start looking into Scripture, asking questions, and thinking about spiritual things. God uses conversations, reflection, sermons, circumstances, and more to help that journey along. So much of our evangelism training focuses on the conversion, we may forget to allow for the process that comes before it. Just as the farmer patiently went to bed and rose up day after day, we must prayerfully wait for the Spirit of God to give new life through God’s word.
Sometimes, when we sow a gospel seed, we find that person already prepared to believe. Chances are God has had many others who also sowed into their life.
So we have seen from this parable that there is a unique power in the word of God, there is an unusual productivity in the word of God, and there is an ultimate purpose in the word of God that will be fulfilled. James 5:7-8 says,
“Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.”
There will be a final day of harvest when the Lord returns (Matthew 3:12; 13:40; Joel 3:13; Revelation 14:14). But I also believe that Jesus is speaking about the harvest of the people even now who will believe in Him (John 4:35). God’s kingdom garden will produce a bountiful harvest. As he preaches the word and teaches disciples, Jesus is casting seeds in anticipation of the harvest. Just as the man literally “sends” the sickle, Jesus would “send” His disciples to preach and make disciples (Mark 6:7-13; Matthew 28:18-20). He would also “send” the Holy Spirit to empower them (John 16:7, Acts 1-2). Today, Jesus’ Spirit-empowered followers still sow the seeds of the good news of the Kingdom.
May we be faithful in “sowing the seed,” growing in our walk with Christ, praying for a harvest, and leaving the results to the Lord!
Today’s Prayer
Could you pray something like this? (Please take time to make the prayer your own. This is just an outline or model; the prayer needs to be yours. Pray as long as needed to see God work in your heart).
Lord Jesus, thank You for helping me place my faith in You as my Lord and Savior.
Father, I thank you that You planted that seed of the word into my life and that it has blossomed into a relationship with You.
I pray for my friends today that you would help the seeds that have been planted in their life to sprout and grow into a place ready for harvest.
Grant me the eyes to see where they are in the process, the patience to wait on your timing, and the joy of watching their growth towards you.
Help me to see the harvest around me and give me the confidence to call people to step into following you.
Grant me that privilege of the harvest.
Amen.
Today’s Action
Take some time today to pray for those on your list by name.
Ask God to help you discern their spiritual journey and where they are on it.
Ask God to give you insight into their spiritual need and how you might help their growth.
Ask God to help you have a conversation this week with one of those friends.
