30 Days of Prayer for the Harvest

Day 5 – Friday, January 16, 2026

This is day 5 of our 30 days of concentrated prayer for a harvest of souls for Christ. Our theme verse is Luke 10:2, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Luke 10:2).

On days 1-3, we saw that we must pray because there are multitudes of lost people (9:35), because their spiritual need is so great (9:36), and because the laborers are few (9:37). Yesterday, we began to look a parable about the harvest, the growing seed, from Mark 4:26-29:

26 And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, 27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. 28 For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

We saw that to have a harvest, we begin by scattering the seed of the word of God, the message of the gospel.

Today’s Devotional: The Unique Power of God’s Word

After the man scatters the seed, what happens? “…the seed should sprout and grow.” He has sown the seed; he sleeps at night and rises by day; he leaves it; and he waits. Yet, what a miracle! The seed sprouts and grows. Did he cause it to grow? No, in fact, “… he himself does not know how” it sprouts and grows. He does not control it, “For the earth yields crops by itself.” It is a mystery that God has built into the creation itself.

A seed doesn’t mature to harvest instantly. The seed needs time to germinate, grow, and develop through a natural organic progression. The job of the farmer is not to rush it, but to wait patiently for signs of growth. Eventually the growth becomes evident, “first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head.”

Sowing the gospel seed is the same way. When it is sown into a prepared heart, it is a mystery, but that seed begins to germinate. Sometimes it happens in minutes or hours. At other times, it may take months or years, but there is life within that seed and God can cause it to germinate within the heart. When it does, life springs forth. Hebrews 4:12 says,

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The seed of the word of God is living. It is a seed of life. Paul says in Romans 1:16,

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…”

The gospel of Christ is the power of God to save sinners. The life is in the seed. The soil, the weather, and the cultivation of the plant all play a part in the growth, but the secret of the growth is in the seed itself. The life is not in the water, the life is not in the sower, the life is not in the soil, the life is in the seed!

When the word of God is planted in a human heart, the Spirit of God uses that word to produce conviction in the heart of the hearer. Never think for a minute that your witness for Jesus is in vain. You cannot always see what God is doing in the heart. But His seed is working beneath the soil to bring souls to Himself. Many godly parents have spent their lives praying for and witnessing to their wayward children. Never give up! Keep sowing the seed. You never know when the time will be just right for that seed to spring to life. God can do it. That’s why we pray, because only the Lord can give life and save a soul.

May we be faithful in “sowing the seed,” praying for a harvest, and leaving the results to the Lord!

Today’s Prayer

Could you pray something like this? (Please take time to make the prayer your own. This is just an outline or model; the prayer needs to be yours. Pray as long as needed to see God work in your heart).

Father, thank You for drawing me to Yourself by the power of Your word. Thank you causing the seed of the word to sprout and grow in my heart. Thank You for saving me by Your grace through the death and resurrection of Your Son.

Thank You the forgiveness, belonging, and peace that passes understanding that I have found in Christ.

I thank You for the circumstances that led me to surrender my life into the joy of following You, those trials and inner questions that helped me see my need for you.

Thank You for the people who faithfully sowed the seed of Your word in me: for their conversations with me, their patient answering of my questions, their trustworthy representation of a Christ follower.

I pray for my friends and family members today that you would help me and others sow the seed of Your word in them. By Your grace will You cause new life to sprout and grow in them just as You did with me.

Amen.

Today’s Action

Think about your journey to faith in Christ. What circumstances in your life helped you see your need for Christ? Who were people of significant influence in your journey, and what did they do to have that significance? How did they sow the seed of God’s word in you?

Spend some time writing out your answers. Pray for those on your list.
