30 Days of Prayer for the Harvest

Day 4 – Thursday, January 15, 2026

This is day 4 of our 30 days of concentrated prayer for a harvest of souls for Christ. Our theme verse is Luke 10:2, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Luke 10:2).

On day 1, we looked at Jesus’ ministry to the lost in Matthew 9:35. Day 2, we saw Jesus’ compassion for the lost in Matthew 9:36. Day 3, we examined Jesus’ call to prayer for the lost. (Click to see Day 1, Day 2, Day 3). We saw that we must pray because there are multitudes of lost people (9:35), because their spiritual need is so great (9:36), and because the laborers are few (9:37).

For the next few days, we will consider a parable about the harvest, the growing seed, from Mark 4:26-29:

26 And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, 27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. 28 For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

Today’s Devotional: Scattering Seed for the Harvest

This parable is a simple story that emphasizes the mysterious growth of the seed, producing a harvest. As with the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4:1-20), where Jesus clarifies, “The sower sows the word” (4:14),  the seed is a picture of the word of God, the message of the gospel, the good news of the Kingdom of God (4:26).

Notice what the man does with the seed. He scatters the seed on the ground (the field is the world, Matt. 13:38). This is his main task. He is not responsible for the growth, only for the sowing. Christ has given His church (and every member in it) the task of scattering the seed. This is the most basic step when it comes to growing a crop. If you don’t sow any seed, no matter what else you do, there will never be a harvest.

If the seed is the word of God, the gospel message, what are some ways that we could scatter seed in the field where the Lord has placed us?

I’m sure you can think of other ways, but, today, let me offer some ways to encourage you that you can sow gospel seeds.

  • Send a sermon link to a friend. Sure, you may not be able to preach a sermon. But have you recently heard a message that could benefit a friend of yours? Send them a link.
  • Share a one-minute testimony. Tell how Christ is making a difference in your life today.
  • Invite a person to read the Gospel of John with you. John wrote his Gospel so that people would believe in Christ. Get together and talk about what you are reading.
  • Place a Scripture with a brief word of encouragement in a note, on Facebook, or in an email. A Bible verse with a personal account of its power in your life can impact a friend.
  • Tell them about an answer to prayer.
  • Invite them to church. Most people will consider coming if you invite them.

What other ways can you scatter seed?

May we be faithful in “sowing the seed,” praying for a harvest, and leaving the results to the Lord!

Today’s Prayer

Could you pray something like this? (Please take time to make the prayer your own. This is just an outline or model; the prayer needs to be yours. Pray as long as needed to see God work in your heart).

Lord, you have given me the task of scattering the seed of the gospel in my world. Please show me how I can sow seeds where I live, where I work, and wherever lost people are.

Father, let my heart be so saturated with the word of God that it will naturally flow from my mouth.

I know this task is too big for me alone. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit to empower me. Lord of the Harvest, send more workers to join us in this mission.

Remind me that only You can cause the seed to grow. Give me patience to keep scattering seed even when I don’t see immediate results.

You know the people I am praying for on my list. Please give me opportunities to scatter the seed of Your word with them today. As I pray for them, would You give them a desire to ask me about my relationship with Christ?

Today’s Action

Think about the people on your list. Consider: What is it about your relationship with Jesus that you wish they knew? Write that down, or think about what you would say if they asked.
