30 Days of Prayer for the Harvest

Day 28 – Sunday, February 8, 2026

Read Psalm 22

Today, in our worship service, Lee Sucher will be bringing a message from Psalm 22. This psalm of David should be understood in association with Psalms 23 and 24. Psalm 22 describes the sufferings of the Good Shepherd, Jesus, for His sheep. Psalm 23 describes His care for His sheep. Psalm 24 describes His return in glory to reward His sheep. Psalm 22 includes prophetic sayings which Jesus uttered from the cross. It also predicts the afflictions he endured there (Matthew 27:27–56; Luke 22:63–65; 23:18–49). Many of the things David describes in Psalm 22 were partially realized in his own life, but fully fulfilled in the Messiah.

Consider these questions as you prepare for worship today:

  1. Why does David cry to God, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Ps. 22:1) What does it indicate about how David is feeling?
  2. Does David feel like God is answering his prayers? (Ps. 22:2)
  3. What can we learn from David’s remembrance of God’s faithfulness in times past (Ps. 22:3-5)?
  4. How is David being treated by people? (Ps. 22:6-8)
  5. How does David express faith in God despite his situation? (Ps. 22:9-11)
  6. How do the sufferings in Psalm 22:12-18 compare to Jesus’ sufferings at the cross? (Matthew 27:27–56)
  7. How does this Psalm help you understand the role of prayer in trials and suffering? (Ps. 22:19-21).
  8. When the Lord answers (Ps. 22:21), what does David resolve to do? (Ps. 22:22-31)?
  9. How can we use the insights from Psalm 22 to strengthen our faith and commitment to God?

Why has my God my soul forsook,
Nor will a smile afford?
(Thus David once in anguish spoke,
And thus our dying Lord.)

Though ’tis thy chief delight to dwell
Among thy praising saints,
Yet thou canst hear a groan as well,
And pity our complaints.[i]

Today’s Prayer

(This prayer is just a model for you to pray, make the prayer your own from your heart as the Lord helps you to pray).

Father, prepare my heart to gather with Your people to worship You today. Thank You Father, that although like David we may sometimes feel abandoned and forsaken, we know You have promised never to leave us or forsake us.

Thank You for Jesus who was forsaken for us on the cross. He endured suffering and death for our sins. May we praise You with David, saying,

I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. (Psalm 22:22)

Amen.
