30 Days of Prayer for the Harvest

Day 25 – Thursday, February 5, 2026

Read Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

This week we are considering this gracious invitation from the lips of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a personal invitation from the Lord Himself for weary and burdened people to come to Himself.

Yesterday, we thought about Jesus’ command to, “Take My yoke upon you.” We saw that we are yoked together with Christ who bore the burden our sin and guilt on the cross. Today, let’s think about the command, “and learn from Me.”

What does this mean? Word translated “from” can either mean to learn “from” Him-in the sense that He is our divine Teacher; or to learn “of” Him-in the sense that He is the divine subject (See KJV). I believe both are true. When we come to Him, we learn from Him and of Him. He is both our teacher and the subject we learn about.

The word “learn” in Matthew 11:29 means to receive instruction and is related to the word for “disciple”. When Jesus tells you to take His yoke upon you and learn from Him, He is inviting you to become His disciple. He commands you to follow Him and to serve Him as your Master.

Jesus tells us that, in taking His yoke and learning from Him, we will find “rest for our souls”. Here, Jesus alludes to Jeremiah 6. In Jeremiah’s day, God offered rest to His people Israel, but they refused it. Jeremiah 6:16 says, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls.’ But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

In the New Covenant, God has sent His only begotten Son to bring you rest for your souls. It is rest for the soul because the nature of the yoke and teaching He puts us under is “easy”, meaning “well-fitted” or “agreeable”. Jesus is our Master, our teacher, but He is not an ill-mannered despot. He is “gentle and lowly of heart.” He humbles Himself to reach down to those who are poor and lowly, weary and burdened by sin and guilt.

What a wonderful Master and Teacher He is! We need never fear to take Him up on His great invitation. He will always welcome us and love us. He will never load us with unbearable commands and teachings that He is not willing to bear with us. As John writes, “… His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (1 John 5:4).

Think about it—could this be why after Jesus commanded His disciples to go and make disciples of all peoples (Matt. 28:19), He promised, “lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20)?

I’ve found my Lord and He is mine,
He won me by His love;
I’ll serve Him all my years of time,
And dwell with Him above.

His yoke is easy, His burden is light,
I’ve found it so, I’ve found it so;
His service is my sweetest delight,
His blessings ever flow.[i]

Today’s Prayer

(This prayer is just a model for you to pray, make the prayer your own from your heart as the Lord helps you to pray).

Father, thank You for Jesus, My Savior and Lord, Master and Teacher. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. What a delight it is to learn of Jesus. Every word from You is sweet, and every command is precious.

“How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Ps. 119:103)

“More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” (Ps. 19:10).

Lord, may I feast on Your word daily. May I find Your commands to be a delight not only to hear, but to do. May I keep them with my whole heart.

May I enjoy proclaiming the gospel and sharing Jesus with others today. May I find it a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. Let me be more like my Lord, meek and lowly of heart—not proud or fearful. Let me show Your love unashamedly.

Amen.
